About Me


I am Ajitha Menon, a Kolkata-based journalist with over 20 years of experience in television, print and web journalism. I worked as the Chief of Bureau, Kolkata, of Asian News International (ANI) Television for over 15 years and then branched out as a freelance journalist, writer, researcher and media trainer and consultant from November, 2013. Earlier, I have worked with newspapers like Business Standard and Economic Times, the news agency, Press Trust of India, and television channels like Zee TV (Zee Helpline), Doordarshan (Surabhi, Parakh) and Plus Channel (Business Plus). I am a contributor to the Women’s Feature Service (WFS) and my contributions are regularly published in newspapers across the country and websites across the world. My articles are also included in academic research papers and published in academic and institutional magazines and journals. I write on politics and developmental issues, particularly those related to women, the backward classes and minorities.
I have covered news breaks, natural calamities and other stories across the country, from Kerala to West Bengal, Uttarakhand to Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand and the North-Eastern states to Andaman and Nicobar Islands. I have also covered political and developmental matters from the United States, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Pakistan, Bhutan and Bangladesh and have a good network of contacts across India and the globe.
I am a Fulbright Fellow (USA, 2012-13) and a Chevening Scholar (UK, 2001) and a Laadli Media Award winner. I am also a visiting faculty at Calcutta University, Master of Arts, Department of Journalism,
Besides writing articles, I do research and survey work and print and audio-visual documentation for various Non-government organizations. I also make documentary films on subjects that interest me.

Summary :


I have worked as a journalist for almost 20 years now. The experiences have been exhilarating, tedious, tragic, comic, informative, educative, trying, tiring, inspiring, depressing, but I wouldn't have missed any of it for the world.

I am currently focusing on developmental issues, particularly those related to women, and more specifically women in conflict zones. I have also developed an interest in Media Rights, Gender Sensitive Reporting and Media Ethics. My articles can be read on www.wfs.org and www.thehoot.org.
